Dr. Dean Lewis Dowd

Dr. Dean Lewis Dowd Dean Dowd, 96, of Crooked River Ranch, OR, died peacefully on September 27th. He was born in Salem, OR in 1928, to Dr. Hugh & Vera Dowd, with siblings John and MaryRuth. Dean graduated from Salem High School in 1946, then went into the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Yokohama, Japan. He was honorably discharged a year later and enrolled at Linfield College in McMinnville Oregon. He then attended the University of Oregon’s School of Dentistry. He married Yvonne Stone in 1953, then graduated in 1954 with his D.M.D. degree and opened his own dental practice in Redmond Oregon that August. He and Yvonne went on to have four children: Deonne, Kelly, Tracy, and Shelly. Yvonne sadly passed away in 1978. Dean married Patricia Harrison Lanter in 1980 (who had two children, Diana & Robert), and they moved to Crooked River Ranch in 1984 where they lived for over 40 years. Dean enjoyed homesteading on the ranch, at various times owning chickens, cattle, pigs, & homing pigeons. He was an avid camper, hiker, kayaker, hunter, fisherman, and even leading a group of Explorer Scouts on many adventures. Dean owned and wore many hats and colorful shirts and could always be found in his denim jeans and converse high tops on the trails. He had a hobby of carving & making wooden toys, and he and Pat enjoyed traveling the U.S. in their RV and participating in the Black Powder club, going on Rondevouz. He was a great reader, particularly exploring history and philosophy, along with exploring his family’s genealogy, doing much research and documentation of his family line. Dean also enjoyed photographing flowers, animals, and scenery, arranging all of his photos into various collections and collages. And if you were lucky, you may have enjoyed some cold watermelon with him, followed by a seed-spitting contest. Dr. Dean Dowd is survived by his wife Patricia, three of his children, 2 stepchildren, and countless grand and great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Redmond Memorial Chapel, 717 SW 6th St., Redmond, OR 97756.
