Harold Howard Evans

Harold Howard Evans was born at home on February 16, 1923 to George and Olive Evans, in San Jose, California. He joined a family of an older sister Edna May, an older brother George and Carl, the youngest, joined the family a few years later. He slipped peacefully into heaven on March 13, 2014 in Redmond, Oregon at the age of 91. Harold joined the navy in 1941 and married the love of his life, Joyce Reinke, in 1943. The couple lived in a variety of places while he was in the Navy (until 1947) and afterward settled down in Santa Clara County, California to raise their three sons. Harold (and Joyce) moved to Oregon in 2005 where they spent their final years. Harold served his wife with tender faithfulness until her death in 2012, he served his family with hands-on help and wise guidance, he served his country in WWII flying in a PBM patrol bomber, and he served the San Jose, California Fire Department as a captain for 29 years. Harold was also a Master Mason for 53 years and served tirelessly as the family historian with amazing detail. He was extremely proud that both his sons Hal (San Jose Fire) and Mike (Santa Clara County) followed in his footsteps for their careers serving as fire department captains. Harold was a good humored, hardworking, no nonsense man who was always ready to help others. He loved staying in touch with old friends and continued to collect new ones all the days of his life. He enjoyed fishing, traveling in his RV, spending time with family, singing silly sailor songs with his sweetheart, watching sports on TV, word games, and in his later years, shopping at Wal-Mart. He was quite comfortable the last year of his life that he spent at Cougar Springs. He was the elected president of the Residents Council and his collection of memorabilia was the hit of each social hour. He singlehandedly and successfully issued a campaign last Christmas to collect from the residents a bonus to present to all the caregivers. Harold knew no strangers and always had a kind word for each person he met. He was loved and respected everywhere he went. His cheerful can-do attitude will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Harold is predeceased by his wife of 69 years Joyce Evans, his youngest son, Jeff, and his brothers George and Carl. He is survived by his two sons Hal (and Donna) of Redmond, Oregon; and Mike (and Bonnie) of Pine Grove, California. He is also survived by grandchildren: Alicia Hague, Jacob, Matt, Melissa, Taylor, and Lauren Evans; Lori Zlatkus, Andrew Clark and great-grandchildren: Ben, Hannah and Tyler Hague; Asher Evans, and Casey and Victor Zlatkus. His sister Edna May Kagel survives him as well, living in California. Redmond Memorial Chapel is making the final arrangements and a service will be held at the Assembly of God Church at 1865 W.
