Joanne Marie Carlson

Sisters, Oregon Joanne Marie Carlson, a resident of Sisters, Oregon, died June 25, 2016. She was 87. A celebration of her life will be held sometime later. No other services will be held. Joanne was born January 11, 1929 in Eugene, Oregon. He parents were Thor Frydenlund and Marie (Saari) Frydenlund. She attended Eugene public schools, graduating from Eugene High School in 1946. As a student at the University of Oregon, Joanne was a member of Alpha Phi sorority, Mortar Board senior womens honorary, and Phi Beta Kappa. She graduated with a bachelors degree in Journalism in 1950. In 1952 she married Charles Kitchel with whom she had two children, a daughter and a son. They were later divorced. She married Richard Carlson in Eugene in 1973. Joanne worked at the University of Oregon for twenty-three years, holding several administrative positions, including editor of a national research center in the College of Education, and then as director of the Universitys Office of Federal Relations. Her last position from 1981-86 was in the central administration of the University where she served as a Vice Provost. She chaired the University committee appointed in 1976 to administer the evaluation of the Universitys compliance with Federal Title IX legislation which banned discrimination in educational and athletic programs. Appointed by President Gerald Ford, she served a two-year term, 1975-77, on the Congressionally authorized National Advisory Council on Womens Educational Programs. She served earlier on the Oregon Manpower Planning Council and on the Pacific Northwest Manpower Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Labor. In 1988 she and her husband retired. She did volunteer work for the Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store, and for the Visitors Center at the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce. She also served on the Friends of the Sisters Library Board of Directors. From 1990-92 she worked as a correspondent for the Sisters Nugget newspaper. She is survived by her husband, Richard in Sisters, her daughter, Jenness Roth (Jeff) in Memphis, Tennessee, her son, Dirk Kitchel (Cheryl) in Valdosta, Georgia, two grandsons, Nathan and Samuel Roth, and a granddaughter, Savannah Kitchel, and three stepchildren, Aenne Carver, Lakeside, California, David Carlson, Ottawa, Canada, and Jane Lewis, Lowell Oregon, and eight step-grandchildren. Remembrances may be made in her name as contributions to the Sisters Library or to Sisters Habitat for Humanity, or to the National Wildlife Federation, Reston, VA 20190-5362.
